Introduction

This sub-program focuses on the Accessibility and Universal Design aspects of public community facilities in Kuala Lumpur and the use of access audit checklist to determine the extent of Universal Design incorporation into the facilities. In addition, the study aim to provide guidelines, policies and design of Universal Design facilities of the ‘surau’, kindergarten, community hall, clinic and police station, which will be reviewed by the users.

The access audit checklist is an important tool for accessing the accessibility of a facility and will need to be developed to be more accessible and easier to use.

Impact

  1. Policy on public community facilities for Kuala Lumpur City Hall to incorporate
  2. Develop the existing access audit checklist; easily usable and be interpreted into an access guide or mapping of accessibility of the facilities
  3. Prototype design of ‘surau’, kindergarten, community hall, clinic and police station.

Challenges

  1. Public community facilities are still lacking in accessibility
  2. The list of facilities under study: public community facilities, educational facilities, public health facilities, security and emergency facilities, social welfare facilities, religious facilities, cemeteries.

Benefits

  1. People: Inclusive to people with disadvantages, elderly peoples as well as public.
  2. Planet: Universal design which is the focus of this research would be beneficial to both environment and people.
  3. Profit: This research programme promotes design accessibility and usability, access audit checklist would be beneficial for the public authority in efficiently assess facilities
