Introduction
Malaysian society needs to address the problems disadvantaged groups face with the lack of accessibility and inclusion to transportation, public facilities, recreational and cultural facilities. This Grand Challenge research program will pave the way for multi-representatives to meet, discuss, debate, and create solutions, designs, schemes, guidance, policies and share best practice for the problems identified.
Impact
- Sub-GC1: Seamless transportation and mobility for the inter-generational society
- Sub-GC2: Fully accessible public facilities for daily independent living activities
- Sub-GC3: Enhancing well-being through recreational and sensory therapy in landscape design
- Sub-GC4: Accessible sustainable tourism and universal design index
Challenges
- Transportation issues: lack of inclusive transportation, persons with disabilities, elderly persons, and other groups are not considered or consulted in the planning and policy-making
- Public and community facility issues: accessibilities, safety and usability issues
- Recreational spaces and places for health and well-being of the community issues: more ornamental in nature rather than creating a sense of well-being, possess health-giving properties, accessible, and to be enjoyed
Benefits
- People: Inclusive to people with disadvantages, elderly peoples as well as public.
- Planet: Universal design which is the focus of this research would be beneficial to both environment and people.
- Profit: This research programme promotes design optimisation, sustainable use of resources
