Seamless Transportation And Mobility For The Inter-generational Society

GC001A-14SUS: Seamless Transportation And Mobility For The Inter-generational Society

Introduction

In general, the current public transportation system in Malaysia is still not accessible for the disabled; a situation that clearly negatively affects their quality of life. The efforts to improve the accessibility of the public transportation system thus far have been piecemeal or sporadic. There is no specific legislation pertaining to the accessible design of transportation. There is also no of practice on accessible design of transportation. Thus, this research will try to identify and investigate the problems in non-inclusive transportation and barrier-filled situation in the Malaysian built environment as well as to establish a policy framework. Furthermore, this research would ensure design and guidelines for accessible transportation systems be validated and incorporated.

Impact

  1. Sub-GC1: Seamless transportation and mobility for the inter-generational society
  2. Expected outputs: policy on accessible transportation for Malaysia, design prototype of Universal Bus Stop Design, Transportation intelligent systems for disabled persons in Malaysia ad Webpage for accessible transportation.

Challenges

  1. Transportation issues: lack of inclusive transportation, persons with disabilities, elderly persons, and other groups are not considered or consulted in the planning and policy-making
  2. Public and community facility issues: accessibility, safety and usability issues
  3. Recreational spaces and places for health and well-being of the community issues: more ornamental in nature rather than creating a sense of well-being, possess health-giving properties, accessible, and to be enjoyed

Benefits

  1. People: Inclusive to people with disadvantages, elderly peoples as well as public.
  2. Planet: Universal design which is the focus of this research would be beneficial to both environment and people.
  3. Profit: This research programme promotes design optimisation, sustainable use of resources
