Abstract

The UM Grand Challenge Promoting Independence in Our Seniors with Arthritis (PISA) is an innovative, ambitious and interdisciplinary project with the primary aim of tackling disability among older persons with osteoarthritis from the molecule to the community. The PISA is a large research project involving a longitudinal exposition of the older OA sufferer’s experience with joint replacement, bladder problems, sexual issues and social participation. In this project, we have worked closely with non-governmental organizations and local communities from the project conception. In 2015, the PISA project was finding its feet in its first full year, establishing recruitment methods and its data collection format. We have successfully set up a biobank for OA research which is uniquely connected to detailed patient characteristics. We had also developed a prototype for a device for assessment of erectile dysfunction (a condition causing sexual problems in men). With regards to our social participation arm of our project, we hadn embarked in a community-based pilot project to develop social interventions among older community dwellers. We had written a review article of psychological interventions which was published in Current Opinions in Psychiatry, Tier 1, Impact Factor 3.94, which is the good start we need to many future high impact publications. Our Sport Science collaborators has also helped us produce a video and booklet on “exercises for older people with arthritis”.
