Abstract

Prevent Elder Abuse and negleCt initiativE (PEACE) is a five-package research program which employs a coordinated multistep approach involving various stakeholders (such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and Department of Social Welfare) with the aim of building partnerships, fostering community empowerment and promoting protection for our older population. Elder abuse and neglect (EAN) includes psychological, physical, and sexual abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. The Prevent Elder Abuse and negleCt initiativE (PEACE) focuses exclusively to protect elder abuse rights, re-orientate and empower the community to be actively engaged in issues relating to older people. This initiative addresses five main areas; examine the magnitude, risk factors and consequences of EAN, investigate the role of social capital and caregiver strain in preventing EAN, developing provision of education and training to service providers providing direct service delivery to older people, support and train family caregivers who provide care and protecting elders against elder abuse and neglect by identifying the existing laws and understanding as well as refining these laws. The output from the PEACE project has generated awareness on the issue of Elder abuse and neglect (EAN) to the stakeholders (international community, policymaker, government agency, healthcare and local community) via mass media and community engagement activities.  Based on UM PEACE findings, Dato' Seri Dr Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail, the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, has announced the need of a new act to protect the welfare of Malaysia’s elders from neglect and abuse and the draft of the new act to be ready by 2020.
